No.9 - Augusta Starkey House

21 F Street

This home was built around 1896 for Reginald Vaughn and may have been designed by English architect Charles Z. Herman, who lived across the street. During the late 1890s, Mr. Vaughn landscaped this home with numerous trees and shrubs.

The second owner was Hamilton B. Clark, a journalist, newspaperman and former president of United Press, who founded at least two newspapers. After his death in 1917, his wife Sarah, who served as director of the Peoples State Bank, continued to live here until 1925.

Harold B. Starkey, Sr., a prominent member of the San Diego financial and social community, purchased the house in the 1930s and lived here with his wife, Augusta.

This house is notable for its architectural style and its status as one of the few remaining Chula Vista orchard houses.
