No. 38 - William Sallmon House435 First AvenueWilliam H. Sallmon and his wife, Alice, bought this property in 1916 from the San Diego Land and Town Corporation and had the house constructed that year by L.E. Smith. Sallmon, a native of Ontario, Canada, was a 1894 graduate of Yale University and served for one year as supervisor of Yale's college in Chang Sha, China. In Chula Vista, Sallmon served as First Vice President of the San Diego Land and Town Corporation and the Sweetwater Water Company. On his death in 1938, he left a $41,000 endowment to the Chula Vista Public Library. This house is a good example of the Pueblo Revival style and, except for some window alterations, retains integrity of design and materials. |
